While there are a few variations of poodles today, did you know there is only one breed of poodles back in the 19th century?

We will get into more of the variety later, but first, let us talk about the history of poodle dogs.

The word poodles come from the German word “pudel”, which means “to splash”. Cynologists believe poodles are and it is first kept by hunters to retrieve fowl tracing back to the 19th century in Germany because of their strong swimming ability.

In the 20th century, during the boom of the industrial revolution, people in that era gotten wealthier and the demand for entertainment increased. At that time, circus shows became some of the most popular forms of entertainment people can choose.

Because of their athletic, obedient, intelligent nature and their ability to learn tricks, standard poodles gained exposure in circus performances and the circus-goers love them, particularly in France.

As circus showmen travel from city to city frequently, breeders started to breed smaller types of poodles to save the cost of transportation, this is when the miniature poodles are born.

In just a short time, miniature poodles became popular for circus showmen because it is easier to handle and transport this new variation of poodle breed due to their lighter weight and smaller size.

As time progressed, the popularity for miniature poodles increases and they slowly made their way from of being show dogs and integrate themselves into normal people’s lives as people started to keep miniature poodles as their companion dogs.

As miniature poodles’ popularity grew, there is a clear demand from dog owners for a less active, and much smaller breed of poodles. Hence, the small toy poodle variation that we get to know in modern days is born.

While poodles have gained consistent popularity as a house pet, it wasn’t until 1935 when a show dog calls Champion Nunsoe Duc de la Terrasse won the North Westchester Dog Show and the demand increases even more and they eventually dethrown beagles in 1960 to become the most registered dog breed in United States until cocker spaniel reclaimed the title 23 years later.
